Like a security blanket

By Katrina Winn Added Sat, May 15th 2010, 16:19

My friend's Grandmother died last week and we got talking about the important role Grandparents play in our lives. They're like security blankets in life.

The safe place we go to when we are children; where we know we'll get spoilt a little; where we are less judged and loved unconditionally; where we receive treats even when we don't really deserve them; where we can sift through their old stuff and hear stories of the old days; where we may even be able to stay up a little later at night; and where cuddles are often in abundance.

If we are lucky, we get to spend quality time with our grandparents and they form an important part of a childhood that comes to an end all too fast. When your last Grandparent has passed away, it's an end to that era but you are left with  memories become treasures.

Often by then, you have reached mid life yourself, and are now drawing close to that time in life where you too may become a Grandparent. Countless times I have heard, "I can't wait to become a Gran because you get to enjoy them but also get to give them back!" It has a certain appeal I must say.

I had my own four children within six years and life was a blur for a while with little time to savour the moments and enjoy the baby stage. So I am definetly looking forward to having babies in the family again - but ones I don't personally have to have endless energy for (since I won't have them 24/7) or be up in the night for! I do however look forward to spurts of caring for my grandchildren and hope in the process it will help provide 'breaks' for their parents to recharge their batteries!

Women in midlife are often too busy to spend large chunks of time supporting their children as they start their families . More often than not, Grandmothers are working full time and have limited vacation time. Personally, I want to position myself so I can be a support to both my children, and their children. How on earth I will accomplish that when I have a full work life, I have no idea! I don't worry about it through because I have confidence it will work itself out as priorities shift.

What kind of Grandparent do you want to be, and what fond memories do you have of your your own. What kind of legacy did your Grandparents leave behind, and what kind of legacy do you want to leave behind for your own grandchildren?

Pop into Chatterspace and share your memories and thoughts.
