Who would have picked Japan for a white Christmas? For me, Christmas holidays had always been at the beach in New Zealand with jandals, BBQ’s and warm summer nights. TH (the husband), who had grown up in Britain, had a jaundiced view of Christmas and snow. “It’s not all that its cracked up to be,’ he warned. But, just once, I wanted to try the whole white Christmas scene.

As New Zealanders, we are used to flying long journeys to the far side of the world and back. However, can you imagine flapping your own arms to get there and without stopping?
Yeah, right. If I had the courage to launch myself off the roof of my house, I’d drop like a stone before I cleared the back fence.
Bar-tailed godwits make an epic flight every year to Alaska from Miranda, south east of Auckland in the Firth of Thames. Some even flap a little further over to Eastern Russia.
