From where I am sitting I can see a tree outside my window, bearing tightly-furled buds that are pink with the promise of blossom. Every year, the arrival of spring triggers an up-welling of excitement and anticipation within me. Spring 2007 is particularly poignant as I am embarking on a new life, as a single mother. Again. |

Recently, on a sunny Sunday, I organised a lunch date with my two partners. We drove to a seaside suburb, bought food and drinks from a café, then sat at a picnic table on the foreshore. Whilst enjoying our purchases, we chatted and laughed together, simultaneously drinking in the welcome sight, sound and smell of the surf.
Wait a minute… Two partners? Yes. The two people I love returning home to at the end of the day…

What did you lose when your relationship ended? Your house? Your furniture? Your savings? Every woman who has been through a separation has a tale to tell about the resultant decimation of assets. It’s an inevitable part of the process, thanks to the Property Relationships Act, which decrees that couples living together for 3 years or more will have the house they live in, furniture and cars divided on a 50:50 basis, regardless of who paid for those assets

On an auspicious evening in August, I looked at a website homepage, liked what I saw, and decided to click on ‘subscribe now’. As a consequence, three months later, I was preparing for a flight to Auckland, to meet a group of like-minded women…

All of us who attended Womenz Night Out at the Langham were charmed by Peta Mathias. She delighted us with her wit and took our breath away when she revealed her talent for singing―a cappella and in French. Singleminded Julie, wanted to know more and Peta graciously offered to do an interview…

Recently, a group of nine teenagers sat around a table at a Chinese restaurant, sharing a selection of dishes that they had chosen together. The adult who was with them watched their animated faces with delight and satisfaction, whilst listening to the conversations and peals of laughter that swirled around the happy group. They were at the restaurant to celebrate the 15th birthday of one of the girls in the group (whom I will call Olivia). Olivia’s mother (I will call her Marie) was the adult accompanying them.

I’ve had an epiphany.
It occurred recently, after I received some news that stunned me. News that, conversely, did not surprise me however, and fortunately, nor did it hurt me. In fact, it made me laugh, and I’ve been smiling to myself ever since.

Stephanie and Alice (not their real names) struck up a friendship ten years ago, when they became workmates. They appeared to have a lot in common―both married, similar ages, with young families, and each working part time to supplement the family income. Parenting was their top priority, and they laughed and commiserated together as they shared the highs and lows of this ‘job’.

Recently I read an interesting article in a newspaper about the elusiveness of female financial security. A well-known New Zealand financial writer noted in the article that women still tend to depend on men for financial security. Single women may have good earnings, but they tend to plan no further than holidays and lifestyle purchases, and they hope (and possibly assume?) that a man will one day come along and rescue them. As this writer rightfully pointed out: what guarantee do women have, that life (eventually) comes with a man? Even more sobering is the fact that each year in New Zealand at least one third of relationships end, with more than 10,000 married couples divorcing and many more de facto relationships failing. Although assets are split under property laws, women are usually worse off when a relationship ends, according to research by the Ministry of Social Development.

Yesterday I read a quote in a newspaper that struck a chord. It comes from E. M. Forster (as a child): “I would rather be a coward than brave, because people hurt you when you are brave.” Those words aptly describe the experience I’ve endured over the past 14 months, at the hands of my employers. Disturbingly, I am a government employee, and the treatment that was meted out to me was done so by a management team within a District Health Board.

Several years ago, my children’s primary school was fundraising for a new school hall. It was a mammoth undertaking, but fortuitous timing led to a lucky break that enabled the school to reach its goal sooner than anticipated.

A few evenings ago, I had a phone call from a friend whom I’ve known since my school days. She had some worrying news―another ex-school friend of ours recently found out that her husband has been having an affair.

For me, the first anniversary of a significant event tends to be a time of reflection. Fortunately that reflection is usually positive, as I look back 12 months and marvel “Look at where I was then, and look at where I am now.” I see progress, and progress goes hand-in-hand with growth. The catalyst for growth is often change.
