I’m a great believer in seconds- second helpings and second chances are two of my favourite things. A second child however, was not exactly in the deck of cards I thought I was shuffling at age 39. Yes, I had finally found the man, was anticipating a blissful wedding and a dreamy honeymoon wandering the coastline of New Zealand in a borrowed campervan. The world was our oyster. I have a confession to make- I find the term baby boomer inelegant. I always have. Babies we aren't. I turned in my pacifier hours ago. And 'BOOMERS' conjures up images of humans-as-crazed-construction-sites-on-legs, crashing haplessly onto the scene. The women I meet are more eloquently described as 'she whose time of life has come'. The truth is: we rule. Read the article...

How do I feel about aging? Really feel about it? You would have to ask me when I’m having a Maxine morning—too much blood left over in my alcohol stream from last night, coupled with PPMS, the special gift of perpetual pre-menstrual syndrome for the peri-menopausal among us. Right now I feel annoyed, not with aging so much as with the way boomers seem to have made it something we just invented

I know a lot more about what I want (most of the time) than when I was younger, and the expectation for sensuality and flirting to lead to sex, or relationships isn't what I'm about- which is hopefully a relief for my partner. What I am after is vitality and keeping the juices flowing.

It's a few days before the world celebrates Christmas. I have both my children at home with me and they're both fed, with expressions that shine like early stars in a softly clouded heaven. I look across the water and give thanks; it's a moment when nothing has to happen and hopefully nothing will. Other than our lives continuing to intersect, there's nothing I could wish for.

My great grandmother lived to be ninety-two years old. She managed to give birth to and raise thirteen children during her lifetime, without the benefit of pap smears, mamograms, or medical interventions of any kind. Sometimes, when I'm off to seek an expert's advice for a warrant of fitness to do with my anatomy as a woman, I wonder if modern women are really better off or just more medicalised than women were in my grandmother's day.

Individuation. It's a big word. It's typically used to describe an even bigger process pertaining to how we define ourselves for ourselves over the course of a lifetime. Psychologists know that it first comes up in spades during the terrible twos. We expect toddlers to want things their way and to make our lives impossible for a while. Then the big push to be your own person comes on like gangbusters at adolescence. Hormones skyrocket, phones get monopolised a whole lot more, we look, smell and feel like we're ready for something BIG. It’s like Bowie said "ch-ch-ch-changin' to face the strain", and it doesn't end―ever.

Words that start with ‘S’: stoic, serene, skeptical, surprised; these all come to mind as my 50th approaches. It’s such a cliché to obsess about the start of this particular decade and I know it. But damn it, it is different than turning 40. I sense that the box to tick for your age goes from 30-49 and then jumps to 50-65 because I’m crossing a threshold―never again to be seen in quite the same light by people who find out. And they will find out because I’ll tell them. On a good day I’m likely to hear, “Gee, you don’t look fifty,” and that will be sadly but sincerely intended as a compliment.

What do you do when your will to live flags? We all have ways to cope or we don’t survive. My own favourite therapies to relieve desperate levels of stress have been known to come disguised as everyday experiences. This is especially true of experiences involving getaways on trains. What else compares with the romance of the rails?
