Each of us has a story to tell. Some are stories of overcoming incredible adversity, others are stories of intrigue and inspiration. Regardless of whether it is a surviving or thriving story we all have something to share.

Nobody ever thinks their child will die before they do, but unfortunately it does happen and it did happen to me. She was my only daughter and we had a very strong connection. It was her birthday on Monday the 26th May and she would have been 27 years old if she had survived. Hayley died at the age of 21 years and it will be six years this year since her passing. I have pondered on writing this for some time but knew I would write it when the time was right.

In 2002, aged 21, Emma made her debut as a driver on the New Zealand rally car scene. She instantly revealed her natural talent, amazing her mechanic father, who was sitting in the co-driver’s seat, by winning the open 4WD class and finishing 6th overall out of a field of 98. During that first year of driving she also achieved ‘top 10’ Rally New Zealand stage times in international fields and was within one second of Possum Bourne’s time in one stage (he went on to finish second in the event). My own favourite therapies to relieve desperate levels of stress have been known to come disguised as everyday experiences. This is especially true of experiences involving getaways on trains. I was one of eight children who were all loved and cared for by two wonderful people. Being the youngest girl I know my older siblings probably have a more realistic view of our upbringing; and maybe I see my childhood with a rose tinted perspective, but it is real to me….

Barbara Kendall is one of New Zealand’s best-known and most-loved sports people. A windsurfer for nearly 25 years, a wife and mother of two small girls, Barbara is currently preparing to compete again in the World Windsurfing Championships. She will then go to Hong Kong to make final preparations for her fifth Olympic Games campaign, where she has high hopes of adding to her collection of three medals (gold, silver and bronze). The only other New Zealanders who have competed in this many Olympics Games are Ian Ferguson and Mark Todd. Her achievements in New Zealand include 15 national titles since 1985, Sportswoman of the Year three times, Yachtsperson of the Year twice and an MBE for services to windsurfing. Barbara, her husband Shayne and family are presently in Europe. Following is the first of a two part email interview Barbara kindly agreed to do with Womenz.

Barbara Kendall began her windsurfing career at the age of 16 and at 20 won her first World Windsurfing Championships title. Two years later she won gold in the Barcelona Olympics, the first New Zealand woman to do so in 40 years. She has since collected the full set of Olympic gold, silver and bronze medals and has not finished out of the top three in any of the World Championships she has entered since 1997. Barbara and her family are currently in Europe where Barbara is preparing for her Olympic campaign.

It appears that a certain ten-inch cardboard boy is the ideal travel companion for itinerant grandmothers. The idea began in Canada in 1994 where teachers read the story of ‘Flat Stanley’ to the class before each child made its own cardboard boy... an intriguing adventure story
