Women's stories
From the ashes comes life. Most of us at some stage in our lives are faced with challenges and real trauma. The good news is that after we survive the event we can begin to truly thrive as we learn from our experiences and grow towards our full potential. We often don't find out how strong we truly are until faced with life-changing dilemmas.

For me, the first anniversary of a significant event tends to be a time of reflection. Fortunately that reflection is usually positive, as I look back 12 months and marvel “Look at where I was then, and look at where I am now.” I see progress, and progress goes hand-in-hand with growth. The catalyst for growth is often change.

I recently said “goodbye” to two old and dear friends. I’d known them intimately for most of my 46 years of life and although I felt sad on some level, part of me was ready to let them go. Sure they’d stuck by me through thick and thin, however I couldn’t help but feel like their constant presence was contributing to my frequent anxiety.

I’ll never forget sitting on the front steps of our home, 10pm on a school holiday week night, hearing my husband mumble the words, “I think I’m Gay.”
It took quite some time for those words to sink in. I calmly absorbed the information and immediately thought, there will be a way around this, he has got himself a bit muddled, it must be the stress. Afterall I felt I knew him like the back of my hand, he was my husband, my mate, the person I was still in love with, even after 16 years of marriage. Read the article...

When asked to write an inspirational story for Womenz I thought which story exactly. I have so many and yet as I sat in deep thought I realised that there really is only one story and that is how I got to be writing this story you are reading right now.
I never realised that at the age of 3 anyone could hurt me and as I have my own 3 year old now I see how vulnerable and sensitive they are to any pain or hurt, yet are so forgiving and live so much in the present moment.

As I was thinking about writing this article, I was wondering to myself how I would broach the subject of abuse. I then thought about the people who may be reading it that have themselves been abused, and their pain and I immediately felt unqualified to talk about it. Strange really, considering I too have been abused and yet, as with most people who have, I replayed the old tape in my head that says “you are not as good as everyone else” and I realise that I still have more work to do.
